All-electric Kia Niro breaks cover

South Korean firm reveals battery-powered crossover due to go on-sale late 2018 in Korea, with a global launch to follow

The latest electric machine to come from South Korea has been revealed – introducing the Kia Niro EV.

Shown for this first time at the International Electric Vehicle Expo in Jeju, South Korea, the battery-powered crossover will join the Niro range which already offers exclusively electrified drivetrains.

As for its appearance, the Niro EV retains the core look of the base car but brings a few touches inspired by a concept of the same name shown earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics ShowRyan in Las Vegas. These include a model-specific radiator grille, tweaked air intakes and ‘arrow-shaped’ LED daytime running lights.

Although the Kia Niro EV is set to go on sale in South Korea later this year, the firm hasn’t given a date for an arrival in Europe – stating it would be introduced in other markets “in due course”.

Despite that, it will make its global show debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show in September. Expect full UK pricing and specifications to follow shortly after that.

For now, though, the Kia Niro is available in both regular hybrid and plug-in variants on our shores, with pricing for the crossover starting at £23,135.
