Porsche reveals Cayman GT4 Clubsport rally car concept

German sports car firm reveals concept rally car, which could potentially reach production based on feedback at Rallye Deutschland

Published

Porsche has revealed a new concept car which, if placed into production, could signal the brand’s return to rally.

This Cayman GT4 Clubsport is set to make an appearance at this year’s Rallye Deutschland, where it will take a trial run before the full-blown WRC machines hit the stage. Two-time Le Mans 24 Hour winner Romain Dumas will be at the helm.

The German firm will then decide on putting the concept into production based on feedback taken from the event.

No performance details have been revealed, but it’s likely to have specs similar to the Cayman GT4 Clubsport race car on which it’s based. That would mean 380bhp from its 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine.

It’s far from the first time Porsche has dabbled in rallying. Head back 50 years, and the brand took victory at the Monte Carlo Rally three years in succession, from 1968 to 1970. Most recently, it won the 1984 and 1986 Paris-Dakar Rally with a Group B-derived version of the legendary Porsche 959 race car.

Should the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport rally car come into production though, don’t expect to be able to use one for your commutes to work. it’s likely it would be sold to customers via Porsche Motorsport, which provides track-focused variants of its road cars to those who want to go racing in either GT4 events or its own one-make series.

Expect to hear more on the fate of a production rally version Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport following Rallye Deutschland, taking place from August 16-19.
