Burt Reynolds film car replicas set to go under the hammer

A number of vehicles built to replicate those driven on-screen by Burt Reynolds are heading to auction next week.

The late actor, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 82, became known for his ‘bad boy’ roles in films that would often see him get behind the wheel of some impressive machinery — often driving in a fashion to match the persona.

America auction firm Barrett-Jackson will sell three recreations of those iconic film cars at its upcoming Las Vegas auction, taking place from September 27-29.

First up is a 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, dressed up like that driven by Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit. Reynolds famously played Bandit in the film, which hit cinema screens in 1977. The black-and-gold muscle car boasts a 6.6-litre V8, paired up to a four-speed automatic gearbox. This particular example has even been signed by Reynolds himself.

Another Firebird Trans Am follows that, but this time a red example — a replica of that driven by Reynolds in Hooper — where he plays movie stunt driver Sonny Hooper. Offered with the car is a replica of the character’s jacket.

Finally, there’s a 1987 Chevrolet R30 pick-up that’s been dolled-up the replicate the Indy Hauler used in 1981’s Cannonball Run is also for sale — complete with identical livery. It has seen a few modern conveniences added though, including power steering an air conditioning.

With no reserves on any of the vehicles, it’s anybody’s guess as to what they may sell for. Reynolds fans, it might be time to crack out the savings jar…
