Tesla software update adds retro games and dashcam feature
Free download will turn infotainment system into an Atari console and camera becomes a dashcam
Tesla owners can take advantage of a host of new features with a software update –including a dashcam mode and even the ability to turn the infotainment system into a games console.
Software Version 9.0, which is now available as a free download to all owners of a Model S, X or 3, uses the forward-facing camera fitted to the car to let users record footage and store it on an external flash drive.
On top of this, the external cameras used for the self-driving Autopilot feature can now project a 360-degree view, giving drivers an even clearer picture of their surroundings.
It’s not all just work here, though – there’s a large sprinkling of fun, too. A number of classic Atari games, including Pole Position, Missile Command and Tempest, have been hidden in the system as ‘Easter eggs’ and when the car is parked can be played using the touchscreen and steering wheel.
Company founder Elon Musk previously teased the addition on Twitter. In a post in August, he said: “If you’re into video game development, consider applying to Tesla. We want to make super fun games that integrate the center touch screen, phone & car [in real life]”.
Other features include the ability to update the car’s software remotely and access media controls via a mobile app, along with ‘Obstacle-Aware Acceleration’, which prevents the use of full throttle if a potential hazard is spotted in front.
