All-new BMW S1000RR makes its debut
Flagship supersport bike is more powerful and lighter than the model it replaces
BMW has lifted the lid on its flagship supersport motorcycle – the S1000RR.
Revealed at the EICMA motorbike trade show in Milan today, the S1000RR is more powerful and lighter than the model it replaces.
It uses the same four-cylinder 1.0-litre engine as the older bike, but here develops a total of 207bhp – up by 8bhp over its predecessor. It’s also 4kg lighter than the previous-generation S1000RR, while developing ‘at least’ 100Nm of torque from 5,500rpm to 14,500rpm.
This is the third incarnation of the S1000RR, which was first launched in 2009.
Claudio De Martino, vehicle technology team leader, said: “Our fascinating brief was to take the predecessor model – which has been a dominating force in all disciplines for 10 years – and significantly improve on its performance.
“This we translated into straightforward targets: one second faster on the track, more than 10kg lighter and easier to control. These targets were taken as the basis for every decision. The result is a fascinating new motorcycle that exceeds the targets we set ourselves and will once again set the benchmark.”
It gets all of BMW’s latest motorcycle technology, including a complex traction control system, wheelie control and full ABS system.
It also benefits from four riding modes as standard, with Rain, Road, Dynamic and Race helping the rider to tailor the bike’s settings according to the conditions.
The bike also gets a multifunctional instrument panel, accessed via a 6.5-inch TFT screen. This relays key information to the rider and can be customised to only display what the user wants.
The S1000RR’s suspension has been refined for better handling and improved response, while the bike’s Dynamic Damping Control has been developed further to help deliver an improved ride.
BMW has also announced that the S1000RR will be available with M options and M Performance Parts – a series of upgrades that takes inspiration from the firm’s automobile arm.
The M Package includes a new motorsport paint finish, along with carbon-fibre wheels and a new lightweight battery, among other options.
Prices for the S1000RR have yet to be revealed, along with the bike’s availability.
