Shocking images have emerged showing a four-year-old boy riding on the roof of a moving car.

A report by Australian news outlet 9News claims witnesses in Harrisdale, Perth, saw the boy sat atop the Holden Captiva while wearing just a nappy. Security images obtained by 9News show a small portion of the journey.

It’s not known how long the potentially chaotic act lasted, but it’s reported the driver — the boy’s mother — stopped after passing vehicles flashed and beeped at her. Nobody is believed to have been injured in the incident.

Speaking to 9News, Gerry Georgatos said on behalf of the unnamed mother: “They’re a salt of the earth family, solid, stalwart, and it was just totally unforeseen what happened.

“What happened was inadvertent. It was without a knowledge. They’re shell shocked. They’re grieving at what could have happened. They’re praying to the heavens that nothing happened that would have injured their child, much worse.”

A spokesperson for Canning Vale Police said: “Canning Vale Police responded to the reports and located the vehicle driving into a petrol station on Nicholson Road, Harrisdale. Police observed three children in the car, two secured in child restraint seats, however it will be alleged that a four-year-old boy was unrestrained.”
