New Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster is a 577bhp convertible monster

Limited to 750 units, GT R Roadster claims to be equally at home on track or on road

Mercedes-AMG has combined the might of its AMG GT R with a drop-top body style in the form of the new limited-edition GT R Roadster.

The model features the same performance upgrades as its coupe cousin but does away with that car’s carbon-fibre roof in favour of a triple-layer electronically folding fabric roof. In line with most soft-top models, the car’s weight has increased because of the extra strengthening required – but the GT R Roadster is just 80kg heavier than its hard-top sibling.

Powered by a 4.0-litre V8, with twin turbochargers in the ‘vee’ of the engine for a quicker response, it produces 577bhp and 700Nm of torque, sending that to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Mercedes-AMG claims 0-60mph is possible in just 3.4 seconds and the top speed is an impressive 196mph.

There have been plenty of chassis upgrades to deal with that power – the GT R Roadster uses active aerodynamics courtesy of a front splitter and a massive rear spoiler for greater downforce, adjustable suspension, active rear-wheel steering and a carbon-fibre tunnel brace to improve rigidity.

The car’s also been given a pair of new lightweight alloy wheels – staggered at 19 inches on the front and 20 inches on the rear.

It’s instantly recognisable as a GT R thanks in part to that massive rear wing, as well as the deeper front splitter, large rear diffuser and widened wings.

The interior keeps a welcome dose of luxury among all the track finery – nappa leather upholstery swathes the sports seats, and there’s a 10.25-inch digital instrument display to pair with the 12.3-inch infotainment screen.

Only 750 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadsters will be built, although it’s not been confirmed if any will be coming to the UK in right-hand-drive form. If it did, a price tag of around £150,000 would be expected – given the convertible’s circa-£10,000 premium on hard-top models lower down the range.
