MG ZS set to gain electric option

Chinese-built SUV line-up will gain a battery-powered variant in autumn

MG will bring its first electric car to the UK market later this year, with a battery-powered version of its ZS SUV.

The firm currently offers the ZS in China as an electric car named the eZS, where it boasts a claimed 268-mile range under older, less stringent NEDC testing standards. MG says it can be charged from flat to 80 per cent in under half an hour thanks to standard fast-charging equipment.

It’s likely the electric ZS will arrive in more or less identical form as sold in China, although expect a reduction in the car’s claimed range as a result of WLTP testing standards.

Pricing and specifications have yet to be confirmed for the electric ZS, but it has every chance of becoming the cheapest all-electric vehicle on the UK market when it launches in autumn. Currently, the SUV’s range starts at £12,495 for its petrol variants and MG says the EV will bring ‘affordable electric motoring to the British public’.

Daniel Gregorious, head of sales and marketing for MG, said “With the launch of our MG ZS electric SUV we’re delighted to be entering the electric car market at such an exciting time. With all the practicality and versatility of a compact SUV, a full-sized boot and room for five, ZS means electric without compromise.

“With MG’s trademark value-for-money approach, we’re confident that we can help more and more new car buyers to go electric”.
