245bhp plug-in hybrid Cupra Leon set for late 2019 launch
Fresh reports claim plug-in hybrid performance hatchback will arrive at the end of the year, emitting less than 50g/km of CO2
Seat spin-off brand Cupra looks set to launch a plug-in hybrid Leon later this year, said to produce 245bhp while emitting as low as 50g/km of CO2.
The firm had previously confirmed that the hot hatch would be getting an electrified treatment, but this is the first known announcement of technical details.
Speaking to Auto Express, Seat CEO Luca de Meo confirmed them, saying: “In 2020, the new generation of Leon will come to market in five-door and ST [estate] versions. it will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain that will produce up to 245bhp and less than 50g/km of CO2 emissions.
“Just before the end of 2020 the Cupra Leon and Cupra Leon ST, both with plug-in hybrid versions, will arrive.”
Should these figures prove true, it would make the hot hatch congestion charge exempt — perhaps surprising for a performance model.
It’s likely this powertrain is derived from that seen in the Cupra Formentor concept showcased earlier this year, which boasts 242bhp. Though the Formentor is set to head into production as a plug-in hybrid, conventional petrol units are also believed to be on the table — which would likely be the case with the Cupra Leon too.
Current versions of the Seat Leon Cupra, the model yet to be brought underneath the spin-off brand’s wing, use the same 2.0-litre petrol engine as found in the Volkswagen Golf R, producing 286bhp in its lowest guise. It’s possible this powertrain could be carried forward to the next generation of the hatch.
