Geely launches new all-electric Geometry brand

Chinese manufacturer Geely has launched a new all-electric car brand.

Named Geometry, its first vehicle is the ‘A’ – an electric saloon that could rival the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric and Tesla Model 3.

The Geometry A will be offered in two variants, with different batteries. Base models receive a 51.9kWh device, capable of providing 255 miles of range on one charge, while a 61.9kWh option will last for an impressive 310 miles. Both distances have been measured under the NEDC standard.

Regardless of battery size, power is fed to a 161bhp electric motor able to propel the car from 0-60mph in around 8.6 seconds. Geely – the parent company of Volvo – is yet to confirm how long the Geometry A will take to charge, but a 30-minute top-up will see it go from 30 per cent to 80 per cent.

The A takes the form of a slippery saloon, similar in size to the best-selling Toyota Prius hybrid. Aerodynamics clearly played a part in the design, with the A having an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.2375 – around the same as a Tesla Model 3. This is helped by flush door handles and aerodynamic alloy wheels.

Technology from Geely’s other brands makes an appearance in the Geometry A. Of particular note is the adoption of safety kit from Volvo, giving the A features such as blind spot detection, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control plus front and rear collision alert.

The Geometry A will also be China’s first electric vehicle with ‘Level 2-plus’ semi-autonomous driving capability.

Geely says it has already received 27,000 orders for the Geometry A – two-thirds of which come from markets other than China. There’s no word yet on whether the model will be imported into the UK, but right-hand-drive models have been confirmed for some markets.

The cheapest short-range model will cost from 210,000 yuan (circa £24,000) in China before any subsidies, while the cheapest extended-range version pushes this up to 230,000 yuan (circa £26,200).
