The recently died Major Adrian Coles held various roles in public life, but will be particularly remembered as a champion of the humble hedgehog. Realising that hedgehogs were getting fatally trapped in the wells of cattle grids on the Clee Hill, he successfully campaigned for them to be given hedgehog escape ramps. Here he is, right, in October 1982, with his wife Pam, and Mr Simon Kenyon-Slaney, with two hedgehogs trying out the escape ramp in the new cattle grid which was officially opened that day at Clee Hill. It was Britain's first hedgehog escape ramp in a cattle grid.
