Tomorrow, Saturday June 9, marks the climax to commemorations of the centenary of the Battle of Bligny, an action fought by the 4th Battalion of the King's Shropshire Light Infantry on June 6, 1918, which led to the entire battalion receiving the Croix de Guerre avec Palme. There is a service at St Chad's Church, a reception and lunch at Shropshire Regimental Museum at Shrewsbury Castle, and a Band and Bugles concert in the castle grounds in the afternoon. These are soldiers of the 4th Battalion outside the Elephant and Castle pub, Dawley, at the beginning of World War One in 1914 and was taken when they were on furlough before leaving for the Far East, from where they returned in 1917 and were pitched into the maelstrom of the Western Front.
