Taking stock of old village scene

Ken Lawley was quick to recognise the location of this photo which we used in Pictures From The Past, because not only did he live a stone's throw away, he knew what it was like to be in these stocks himself.

"We used to play in the stocks," says Mr Lawley, who is now 75 and lives in Albrighton, and identified the location as the stocks in the village of Norton, between Bridgnorth and Telford.

"I grew up in Norton, at 9 Bridgnorth Road. I recognised it. The fence used to be part of Mr Dunn's garden. Part of his garden is where the bus shelter is now.

"Mr Dunn was the office manager for Apley estates, at the yard.

"I don't know who the two children are. There used to be a big tree next to the stocks, and a small tree which I believe was put in for the Coronation. It's been a while since I've been to Norton.

"Coming into the village from Bridgnorth you have a row of cottages on your left, and then the bowling green behind the hedge, and then a little black and white cottage just before the Hundred House. That used to be the village shop, and I was brought up in the cottage next to the shop.

"I was taken on as a bottle boy by the then landlord of the Hundred House, Bill Ellingham. I continued to work with him and learned pub work as a young lad.

"He took over the Wickets on the A5 at Wellington and I moved over there helping to run the place. He retired and I moved to Wolverhampton as the head barman at a private business club. That's where I met my wife"
