Then and now – still a cafe

A photo we used in Pictures From The Past the other day prompted Herbert Skitt to send us this modern comparison view.

Still there – the same building today.

Our photo, loaned by postcard collector Ray Farlow, showed the Breckland Cafe at Prees Heath. It was undated, but perhaps from around the 1920s or 1930s.

And Mr Skitt's comparison photo shows that not only does it still stand, but that it hasn't changed as much as you might think, although the black and white appearance of yesteryear has gone.

Nowadays it is "The World Famous Ma Baker's cafe, bar, sandwiches, snacks," according to the sign on the building.

Mr Skitt emailed us to say: "Recently there was a picture of the Breckland cafe at Prees Heath. The area was a very busy place in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s with the Breckland being a popular watering hole for passengers and drivers of coaches on the way to their various destinations.

"I have attached a photo the way it looks today, after being a Chinese restaurant for a number of years."
