On the ball Carol spots dad
Carol Wainwright of Wem had a really close look at this photo we carried in Pictures From The Past – and realised to her delight that her father is in the picture.
It shows a match between Oswestry Town Reserves and Wem Town on an Oswestry pitch which wouldn't pass muster these days.
The picture is from the Geoff Charles Collection held at the National Library of Wales and the date given is September 10, 1947, and while those dates have proven somewhat unreliable, it will be around then.
"My father Jim Lewis is in the picture," said Carol.
"He played for Wem Town. The picture is from 1947, but he played with them into the 1960s. The goalkeeper is Hughie Morris.
"I looked at it, got a spyglass out and saw that it was my dad. I couldn't believe it. I was so thrilled.
"He played centre forward and was brill. He was a scout for Everton at one time.
"I can remember as a small child growing up and him playing football."
She said her father supported both Everton and Shrewsbury.
"He was just mad on football. Football is in the family. My husband Colin Wainwright played, and my brother Michael Lewis played."
While her family has distinguished itself in the field of football, Carol herself was to distinguish herself in a rather different field, as she was Miss Shropshire on a record three occasions.
