It was a brick from the Great Wall of China which was used to hold open the entrance door. Yet it is not at the church today and as far as we can tell, few, if any, villagers have even heard of it, which suggests that it must have gone missing many years ago.

However the oriental doorstop was still in use at St Michael’s Church in July 1961, as it was featured in a Star picture published at that time. The accompanying story provided some information.

“It is a brick from the Great Wall of China. It was brought to this country in 1884 by Lieutenant Edward Powell, then serving in HMS Cleopatra. He was the seafaring uncle of the present rector, the Rev Edward Powell, whose family have held the living of the church for over 200 years.”
