Children from John Fletcher and Grange Park primaries joined with pupils from Ladygrove in Dawley, Telford, yesterday to ask John Bercow about his job.

Pupils from the three Telford schools asked about suspending Paul Flynn from the Commons, whether he enjoys his job and his feelings on his wife entering the Celebrity Big Brother house.

He said: "I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I think it is important, even at an age where they can't vote in an election, to know that politics will affect their lives in some way.

"Lots of countries around the world don't have the right to vote so it's important children know they can make a difference, even if it is voting for their school council."

Earlier Mr Bercow had faced questions from A-Level history students at Thomas Telford School after explaining the role of the speaker to them.

He said: "My role is analogous to a head teacher – my responsibility is to keep order, ask questions and keep down the number of people who have to be excluded because of bad behaviour." His visit was organised by the Parliamentary Education Unit as part of Mr Bercow's efforts to make politics and parliament more relevant to young people.

He earlier addressed a regional A-Level conference at Telford International Centre.
