The party's candidates won seats on both Telford and Wrekin Council and Great Dawley Parish Council after by-elections caused by the death of Councillor Brian Duce.

Jane Pinter won the seat on the borough council after receiving 957 votes – 57 per cent of the total – from a 24.5 per cent turn out.

She received almost three times more votes than her nearest opponent, Conservative candidate Alan Scott, who polled 379 votes.

UKIP candidate Ryan Laing gained 312 votes while Independent Angela Jordan received 126.

Labour's Ian Campbell won the parish council election with 584 votes. The only other candidate was Mr Laing, who gained 341 votes. Turnout was 26 per cent.

The balance of political groups on Telford & Wrekin Council remains unchanged with Labour holding 33 seats, Conservative 17, Liberal Democrat three and one Independent.

Councillor Pinter said: "I am honoured to have been elected."
