Councillor Shaun Davies was sworn in at the annual meeting of the authority last night, a month after being voted the leader of the borough's Labour group.

He has replaced Councillor Kuldip Sahota, who retired from the role after five years at the helm.

Speaking after the meeting at Oakengates Theatre, Councillor Davies said: "I am absolutely delighted to be elected leader of Telford & Wrekin Council. I am proud of the borough and will work hard to represent it well, lobby for a fair funding deal for Telford & Wrekin Council and do all we can to protect services at the Princess Royal Hospital.

"It's time to stop the backward, out of date party political games and unite for the benefit of the borough."

Councillor Richard Overton will continue as deputy leader.
