Nine out of 10 people questioned said they intended to vote in the EU referendum.

But only nine per cent said the arguments put forward by politicians had made any difference.

Today pro-Brexit MP Mr Kawczynski said he was against personal attacks, which had the potential to damage the party. But he predicted the Conservatives would continue to be united as a party, whatever the result of the referendum.

Mr Kawczynski spoke after a bitter weekend of campaigning in which Sir John Major branded Boris Johnson as "a court jester" and MP Jacob Rees-Mogg said the former Prime Minister's comments were "the vengeful ramblings of a bitter man."

David Cameron and Boris Johnson continued to make outspoken comments as they continued campaigning yesterday.

The Shrewsbury MP said: "I think this is a very personal and emotional issue, and people feel very passionately about the monumental decision they will be asked to make.

"I would be opposed very much to any personal attacks – but I'm very confident that the Conservative Party will come together again on June 23, and respect the decision of the public whatever that may be."

Last week former Governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King said he had been disappointed with the debate, accusing both sides of making "wildly exaggerated claims".
