EU debate having little impact on voters – poll

The debate about whether Britain should stay in the European Union is having little or no impact on the way people will vote later this month, according to a Shropshire Star opinion poll.

With just over a fortnight to go to polling day, 93 per cent say they will be voting in the referendum.

But only nine per cent say any of the arguments put forward in the increasingly bitter debate have made any difference to them.

Last week former Governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King said he had been disappointed with the debate, accusing both sides of making "wildly exaggerated claims".

On Sunday, former prime minister Sir John Major described Brexit frontman Boris Johnson as a "charming court jester". The Leave campaign then accused Sir John of being bitter and vengeful in is criticism of Mr Johnson.

Shrewsbury Tory MP Daniel Kawczynski today said it was important that a robust debate took place – but urged both sides in the party to take care to avoid personal insults.

But he insisted the Conservatives would "come together" once the poll has ended, whatever the result.
