Labour leadership hopeful Owen Smith's Telford visit called off over crash delays

Labour leadership contender Owen Smith was this afternoon forced to abandon a visit to Shropshire after being stranded because of delays caused by a motorway crash.

It saw Mr Smith stuck three hours away in Cardiff as a rally at Dawley Town Hall in Telford was set to get under way at 3pm.

Just over 50 supporters had gathererd to hear Mr Smith and were told that the event would now be reorganised for a different date.

A spokesman apologised to those who had turned up and promised that Mr Smith would visit Telford soon.

The MP is currently locked in a battle with leader Jeremy Corbyn to take control of the party.

He was due to appear after the current Labour leader pulled out of an appointment to speak in Oakengates last week.

Local Labour party members were told that Mr Corbyn was not able to attend due to other commitments, including a live TV debate with Mr Smith.
