Shrewsbury MP calls on Shropshire Council to keep Quarry pool
Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski has called on Shropshire Council to find a solution to keep swimming facilities in the town centre.
Mr Kawczynski has spoken to council leader Peter Nutting about the issue after being taken back by the strength of feeling shown by people in the run up to the General Election.
It comes after Councillor Nutting confirmed that options are being examined to keep a swimming pool in Shrewsbury’s town centre.
Mr Kawczynski said: "A very large number of people during the campaign said they want the pool to remain in the town centre.
"The value for the local tax payer is very important, but because of the strength of feeling it is clear the council needs to revise its plans and come up with a solution to keep the pool in the town centre.
"People were telling me it would be a lot more convenient in terms of things like transport.
"I have been in touch with Peter Nutting and the portfolio holder for leisure and I would like them to come up with a solution."
Last year Shropshire Council agreed that it wanted to close the pool at the Quarry and to build a replacement at Sundorne.
However, following criticism of the plans, the authority has given other groups 12 months to come up with a plan to keep the pool in the town centre.
Mr Kawczynski added: "The building itself is not a particularly attractive one. The architecture is outdated and it costs local rate payers a lot.
"When I visited, I could see it needed a big, extensive overhaul."
