Reacting to calls for another cancellation of the vote on the Brexit deal, Mr Davies said the best way to amend the deal would be a vote on the deal itself.

He took to social media to express his views on the matter.

He said: "See former Brexit Secretary is today calling for the Meaningful Vote, scheduled to come before MPs on January 14 to be postponed again. Can’t see sense of this.

"Seems he thinks it would put pressure on the EU to amend the deal. Personally I think best way to do this is through the vote itself.

"They won’t believe anything else! If it loses, the Prime Minister would go back to the EU, with the position starkly laid out.

"And it seems she would have the support of Jeremy Corbyn to do that (though not all of his party).

"I hope MPs accept that Withdrawal Agreement is best way to respect the 2016 people’s vote.

"If not, we should seek amendments to the deal, and vote again in February. And also now commit 100 per cent in preparation for leaving with no agreement. Options are narrowing."
