Daniel Kawczynski was addressing students at Oxford University this week when he told them that Jacob Rees-Mogg was a 'great man who will do great things for your country'.

Mr Rees-Mogg, is known for upper-class mannerisms and consciously traditionalist attitudes, and has been dubbed the "Honourable Member for the 18th century".

He spoke in Oxford on Thursday night, Mr Kawczynski said he wished he was able to be there to hear his speech the Oxford University Conservative Association.

"I came across him around 11 years ago when David Cameron and a few others at Central Office trying to prevent him in getting on the candidates list.

"I first came across him at a Conservative Party Conference and I just sat and listened to him. I was a rather young and inexperienced Tory MP but I realised this was a man who was going to play a hugely important role in the Conservative Party. I invited him to lunch and we spoke for two hours. I was mesmerised and I have so much confidence in him. He has put the backbone in to the Conservative Party.

"He has a rare mixture of intelligence, sincerity, kindness and tolerance in the way he behaves towards people with a different view to him.

"One day he will get in to the Cabinet. One of the biggest mistakes Theresa May has made is not listening to him enough when it comes to dealing with our negotiations with the European Union. He is a great man who will do great things for this country over the coming years."

During his talk, Mr Kawczynski told students of his early life in Poland and the constraints and deprivation's his family experienced under Communist rule. He also spoke of the role and conflict of Members of the European Parliament who do not live, work or visit their constituents and who are based overseas and touched briefly on Brexit.
