Call for another debate in Oswestry deputy mayor row

A request to call another extraordinary town council meeting in Oswestry has been submitted after the council rejected the chance to revisit its controversial choice of deputy mayor at the last one.

Chaos broke out in the town's Guildhall on Wednesday at an extraordinary meeting when councillors voted against revoking the motion passed to appoint a new deputy mayor, rather than abide by the traditional method of appointing the longest-serving councillor.

The change means that Green Party councillor Duncan Kerr has been denied the post.

The meeting concluded with cries of "disgrace" from members of the public.

In a replica of previous events, councillor Kerr submitted a request for another extraordinary meeting on Thursday that has again been seconded by Councillor Mike Coppock.

The mayor of Oswestry, councillor Sandy Best, now has five days to call the meeting before Councillor Kerr and Councillor Coppock can call it themselves.

Councillor Kerr, said: "It was very disappointing to see how the last meeting ended.

"I have sought legal advice from the town clerk as well as calling another extraordinary meeting in an attempt to get this situation resolved.

"I want to put this to bed and avoid the inevitable row at the mayor-making ceremony that could occur should this not be sorted."

The meeting is expected to take place within the next few weeks.
