Two of the council's senior sitting councillors will not be contesting their Market Drayton West seats for the party in May – Portfolio Holder for Finance & Corporate Support, David Minnery; and Deputy Portfolio Holder for Procurement, Roger Hughes.

Standing instead for the Conservatives will be Mark Whittle and Ian Nellins, both town councillors who came to town as part of their military service and settled in Market Drayton.

For Market Drayton East, sitting Councillor Roy Aldcroft is standing again.

Meanwhile Karen Calder, who represents nearby Hodnet, has also not been selected. Paul Gill, another military veteran, will contest the seat instead.

The three sitting councillors who have not been selected for re-election have been approached for comment.

The Government has confirmed that this year's local elections will go ahead in England this spring, but voters will have to bring their own pencils to the booths under new coronavirus safety rules.
