Bumper list of candidates for Market Drayton Town Council election

A bumper crop of candidates will contest Market Drayton Town Council's election next month, with a host of new independents putting their names forward.

Several of the candidates standing this year as independents have previously represented the town as Conservatives, while a number of new faces are also among the candidates.

The town council's election will be held in line with local elections across the country on May 6, although postal votes will be despatched over the next week.

In the town council's largest Market Drayton North ward, which has six seats, 13 candidates are standing.

They include Conservative incumbents Matt Erwin, John Gough, Ian Nellins and Mark Whittle, and new Conservative candidate Lee Gilbert.

Incumbent independent Mike Smith is also standing, and the other independents hoping to win seats are Len Donnelly, Roger Hughes (formerly Conservative), Tim Manton, Nicky McDaid, Sam Walton and Martin Wozencroft.

For the Labour Party, Rob Bentley is standing in the north ward.

Wards

In the South ward, which has three councillors, incumbent Alan Cartwright is standing for Labour.

Independent Roger Smith, who has represented the town for many years, is standing again.

Geoff Chevins is standing as an independent, and Jill Beckett who currently sits as a Conservative is standing as an independent candidate.

Anthony Allen is standing for the Conservative Party.

The East ward also has three seats and six candidates are standing.

Town mayor Roy Aldcroft and previous mayor Steve Glover are standing for the Conservatives as before, while Nick Roberts is also standing for the party.

Incumbent Conservative Tim Beckett is standing on an independent platform, and Baz Chapman is also standing as an independent.

Charles Love is standing for Labour.
