Councillor says new 20mph limits are ‘ridiculous’
A Sandwell councillor has said he is “totally against” the introduction of more 20mph zones in the UK apart from in exceptional circumstances.
Councillor David Wilkes slammed Wales’ new speed limit laws as “ridiculous”.
Wales became the first nation to impose 20mph as the default on all restricted roads earlier this month. However, the rollout has been heavily criticised.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told ITV News that “imposing a blanket 20mph speed limit” in built-up areas “is absolutely not right”. He added: “It seems like an attack on motorists”.
Mr Sunak is set to introduce measures preventing councils in England from introducing new 20mph zones, according to reports.
An announcement is expected at the Conservative Party conference starting this Sunday, October 1.
Mr Wilkes said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that “20mph speed limits are ridiculous”.
“I will be totally against them,” added the chairman of Tipton and Wednesbury Conservatives.
When approached by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Mr Wilkes clarified that he believes 20mph zones are “good outside schools” and also dangerous roads where crashes have reoccurred, but said he hopes authorities in England will avoid following Wales’ blueprint.
He said: “20mph zones are good outside schools and where accidents regularly happen, but that’s it.
"Of course, it depends on the area, but I believe 20mph limits cause bigger congestion and more pollution.”
Those for the introduction of more 20mph zones, such as charity Brake, believe the limit makes communities safer, saving lives in the process.
Campaigners also say the drop in speed may encourage a change in behaviour and push people towards active travel.
Early data from Wales has suggested no adverse impact on journey times or congestion based on the 20mph limits in built up areas.
