Nicholas Garvey, Liberal Democrat

Nicholas Garvey

I live in Newport with Joanna and our young family. Quite simply, I would like to make Newport an even better place to live.

What I stand for:

Improved Disabled Access: Much of Newport’s high street has poor access for users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters, compared to other historical centres like Wellington. I will promote improved accessibility in shops and other services for people with disabilities of all types. I will also campaign relentlessly for installation of drop kerbs wherever they are needed.

Safety and security: I set up Newport Neighbourhood Watch because I felt we could all work together to improve the safety and security of our town. I will also campaign hard for Newport to get its fair share of police officers.

A strong local economy: We are very lucky to have such a range of excellent independent shops in Newport. I will promote Newport’s fantastic high street and locally sourced produce.

I believe politics should be straightforward, honest and civilised. If you demand better for Newport, please vote for me in the North and West ward on May 2 (and in the North ward for the town council).

There is so much at stake in this year’s election to Telford and Wrekin Council. Your TWO votes in Newport North and West will be crucial in deciding the future of our community for the next decade.

Over the past four years Newport has been overlooked by Telford and Wrekin Council.

We cannot risk another four years of uncontrolled house building, a chronic lack of parking, no investment in our local services, and a severe lack of police in our town.

It’s only by electing BOTH OF US on May 2, 2019 that we can ensure:

1. A Stop to Uncontrolled House building – to preserve our identity.

2. More Police on Newport Streets – to Keep Us Safe.

3. More Parking in the Town – to keep our High Street prosperous.

4. More Investment in our local services – to ensure people can stay in Newport.

We all know Newport deserves better, and together we can bring change for our community.

Phil Norton, Labour

Phil Norton

Phil Norton is seeking your support as candidate for the borough council in Newport North and West.

Phil has served as a Newport Town Councillor for many years and has been Deputy Mayor of the town he is proud to call home. He has been at the forefront of community activity in Newport having supported Newport Foodbank, Combat Stress veterans and staff and many other local community campaigns. He is a committed trade unionist and has championed and actively supported local Newport businesses.

Phil’s priorities are fighting to retain our 24/7 A&E and Women’s and Children’s services at the Princess Royal Hospital, protecting Newport’s unique character, ensuring the new Innovation Park provides high-quality jobs for local people, and developing much stronger links between our community and Harper Adams University. Phil is also keen to work in partnership with others to make sure Newport gets its fair share of monies from the government Heritage High Street Regeneration Fund.

He is keen that local residents’ views are listened to at every level of decision-making. Councillors are elected to represent their residents and Phil believes that it is important that all decisions are taken with you in mind.

At a time of devastating government cuts it’s crucial that Newport North and West is represented by somebody who is prepared to work hard for their community for the whole term, not just at election time. If elected, Phil Norton will work hard on your behalf.

Peter Scott (incumbent), Independent

Unlike most other candidates I do not have to follow any party line. I work for Newport, the town I was born in. I know and understand all the current issues the town faces and strive to do what I can. This means working with whoever I need to in order to get things done.

I work 24/7 for my community. I deal with issues that affect residents, not national issues. I believe that party politics gets in the way of getting results.

I have 10 years’ experience on the town council and four-and-a-half years on the borough council. In that time I have dealt with bulk collections, fly tipping, dog poo, street lighting, pot holes and other similar issues. That is what a councillor should be doing – Helping the people!

I love serving my town and the borough too. I have been a useful member of the TWC Planning Committee and chaired the CSE Advisory Body. Again these are things that affect us all and I am happy to work for everyone regardless of political persuasion.

I am a man for the people. I offer hard work, truth and dedication.
