A host of new councillors will take their seats in the Much Wenlock’s Guildhall following the town council election next month.

Seven serving members will step down, with just four incumbent councillors standing for re-election.

They will be up against nine new candidates, with 11 seats available.

Much Wenlock voters did not get to choose their town council representatives at the last local elections in 2017 and 2013, when there were fewer candidates than seats.

Among those hoping to get re-elected on May 6 are mayor Dan Thomas, who made history last year when, aged 28, he became the youngest person ever to hold the office.

Natalie Park, Marcus Themans and Duncan White are also bidding to retain their seats.

Meanwhile deputy mayor Mary Hill will step down, as will former mayors Bert Harper, Yvonne Holyoak and Milner Whiteman.

Also standing aside are councillors Dafydd Jenkins, Allan Walter and Matt Park.

The new candidates hoping to win seats are Mike Atherton, Dave Fenwick, Mike Grace, Wilfred Grainger, Paul Hanafin, Sam Neal, John O’Dowd, Robert Toft and Chris Tyler.

Of the 13 people standing in the town council election, all are independent candidates except Mr Atherton who is standing for the Greens.

He is also standing for the party in the Shropshire Council election on the same day, and will be up against Councillor Thomas, for the Conservatives, and Liberal Democrat candidate Imogen Fawcett.
