A former country hotel on the Shropshire border has gone up for sale with a £495,000 price tag. Redbrook Lodge, between Whitchurch and Bronington, has 13 bedrooms.

It is set in nearly two-and-a-half acres of grounds and the building was last used as a hotel in 2004.

Since then it has been used as a family home.

Mark Layder, who took control of the site in 2003, was unavailable for comment today.

But earlier this year, the Shropshire Star reported on his bust-up with Wrexham Borough Council over business rates payable on the building.

Mr Layder had argued that since he was using it as a family home and training centre for his business, which ran management courses, he should not have to pay business rates at the higher rate for hotels.

He had been facing a bill for tens of thousands of pounds from the council, which Mr Layder said had called in the bailiffs.

Now the site is being marketed by agents Halls.

Suggested uses for the building, on the junction of the A525 and A495, include a hotel or care home.

It has reception areas, a commercial kitchen, parking facilities, and gardens.

"Redbrook Lodge offers great potential, subject to planning consent, for a number of uses, including a hotel, care home, substantial private dwelling or a development opportunity," said Steven Murgatroyd, manager of Halls' Whitchurch office.
