Scheme for 22 properties in Wem is back on cards

An application for a housing development which sparked fears of flooding is back on the cards after developers submitted revised plans just nine months after having a similar scheme thrown out.

The Millhouse Group has submitted an application for 22 homes on land by Wem's historic mill months after having a similar scheme turned down by Shropshire Council.

Plans include creating nine town houses and 13 apartments on land off Mill Street. The previous scheme sparked a 700-name petition from concerned residents and objections from Wem Town Council, which said it amounted to 'oppressive overdevelopment' of one of the gateways to the town.

The application was refused by the unitary authority because of fears of flooding, no affordable housing or financial contributions towards off site infrastructure was being provided and the loss of woodland.

Applicants say these issues have now been addressed and the scheme will provide 'sustainable and affordable' apartment accommodation and town houses in Wem.

But Councillor Peggy Carson, member of Wem Town Council, said: "They will never be able to reduce the risk of flooding. There's such a big risk involved.

"I am sure there will be another fight against it by the townspeople."

A report for the Millhouse Group says: "The site offers the opportunity to provide sustainable and affordable apartment accommodation and town houses in the centre of Wem."
