Shrewsbury trackside homes recommended for approval

Controversial plans for six new homes in Shrewsbury have been recommended for approval – despite objections from residents and Shrewsbury Town Council.

Developers want to build three pairs of two-storey, semi-detached properties with gardens and parking spaces at Washford Road in Meole Brace.

The 2,500 square metre site is close to the Shrewsbury and Mid Wales railway line.

A previous application for six homes on the site was rejected last year, after planners said it would create an 'unsatisfactory environment' for potential residents due to its proximity to the railway line.

The latest scheme has been redesigned to take account of the criticisms and each house has been designed to have virtually no windows facing onto the railway.

A statement in support of the application said: "Given that there would be a virtually blank brick wall facing the railway, and all windows would, in any event be double glazed it is highly unlikely that any property would suffer from noise generated by the use of the railway lines."

The scheme has come under fire from local residents and Shrewsbury Town Council with 12 letters of objection received by planners.

Concerns have been raised about the increase in traffic, as well as the site's proximity to the railway line. But despite the concerns, the application has been recommended for approval ahead of Shropshire Council's central planning committee meeting in Shirehall, Shrewsbury at 2pm.
