More than 1,300 people have signed the internet petition calling on Shropshire Council to withdraw proposals to allow a development close to the Old Oswestry hill fort.

Within the council's draft SAMdev plan, the planning blueprint for development of the county, is the site of the Old Port Farm on the Gobowen Road on the edge of Oswestry.

The petition against including the site in the plan was set up on the change.org website by John Waine. He said: "It remains the jewel in Oswestry's crown, an under-valued heritage asset and the old ancient heart of the town. Rather than build modern houses in its shadow, we should look at developing this heritage asset for the town and visitors to appreciate."

The petition, addressed to the north planning committee at Shropshire Council, says: "We are all mere custodians of this precious ancient monument and future generations will thank us for standing back and making a decision that fully respects our heritage."
