Plan for 50 homes near site of Newport store
More than 50 homes could be built near the site earmarked for a controversial supermarket in Newport, it has been revealed.
Shropshire Homes wants to build the homes on land at the back of Willow Tree Cottage off Station Road – yards from where Sainsbury's wants to build a supermarket on greenfield land owned by Telford & Wrekin Council.
More than 600 homes have already been given approval in the town in recent times.
Members of the Save Newport Campaign Group have called for no more housing developments to be passed until there is progress on the schemes which have already been given the green light.
Officials from Shropshire Homes held a meeting with Newport Town Council earlier this year to discuss the latest development for 51 homes.
Managing director Howard Thorne said: "We have consulted with the town council and the planning department and have now submitted the application.
"We have discussed the proposals with neighbours and some sections of the scheme have been altered as a result.
"We have changed the site layout to take account of their comments."
