Public inquiry begins over 170 Newport homes plan

Controversial plans to build up to 170 homes in Newport are at the centre of a public inquiry.

A hearing started yesterday over a bid by Redrow Homes for outline planning permission to build the properties on land east of Kestrel Close and Beechfields Way.

Telford and Wrekin Council's planning committee previously indicated it would refuse the plans due to the site being in the countryside, and the potential for veteran oak trees being lost and insufficient information was received. Revised plans were submitted but later withdrawn.

Residents have widely objected to the proposals. The six-day hearing is being held at the Ramada Hotel in Telford.

In his opening statement, Mr Christopher Young, for Redrow Homes, said it was a "logical place" to locate housing.

He said the council had a "real problem" with the delivery of affordable homes, adding: "The proposal will deliver 35 per cent affordable homes which will help to meet the local needs in Newport."

He argued that the council did not have a five year housing land supply.

This was refuted by Mr Vincent Fraser, for Telford & Wrekin Council, who said the development would have a great impact on the character of the area. The hearing continues.
