The properties, being built overlooking the River Severn, have been designed by Johnson Design Architects, based in the town.

Director Matt Spinks said: “We are very proud of the new houses, which will set a benchmark for the area in terms of design and specification.”

He said that the two-bedroom modern cottages were being constructed on the site of a derelict gym at the rear of iconic Bishop Percy’s House, which is currently being refurbished to plans drawn up by his firm. The 16th century half-timbered property in Cartway is being converted into a tea room and holiday apartments, with the two additional properties being built at the rear.

Each new house will have two en-suite bedrooms on the ground floor, open plan living areas on the first floor, balconies and glazing to the front elevation to offer lots of natural light and make the most of the river views.

They will form a contrast to the black and white timber-framed property next door.

Mr Spinks added: “This is a very important initiative for Bridgnorth and for Johnson Design Partnership as it incorporates refurbishment and remodelling of the historical building and an innovative, modern element to the rear - it will be a bold blend of ancient and modern.

“We are very much looking forward to seeing the completed project this summer.”
