The new 3G pitch would be sited on playing fields near the Telford Snowboard and Ski Centre in Madeley.

The scheme would also provide dedicated parking and an extension to the Ski Centre offering new changing rooms.

Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet approved £427,000 of funding for the scheme during a meeting at Addenbrooke House last night.

It is estimated that the project will cost more than £1.7m, with the rest of the funding coming through the capital programme.

The scheme was welcomed by Councillor Lee Carter.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting, he said: "The development will hopefully boost usage of the ski centre and those facilities there."

Councillor Richard Overton added: "It's good news for the residents of Madeley. "I believe it will be a fantastic facility."

The target date for completion would be April 2018.

Subject to planning permission, the proposed facility would replace the former Madeley Court artificial turf pitch.
