More homes lined up for old Telford pub site

Plans have been submitted to turn further parts of the site of a former Telford hotel dating back to the 17th century, into flats.

The Charlton Arms was left derelict for about a decade.

The former Charlton Arms, in Wellington, has already been converted into 11 flats, but new plans have been submitted for a revised layout of further development to the rear of the site.

Fresh plans have been submitted to re-site one apartment block with a total of eight one and two bedroom apartments and replace another apartment block with five two bedroom homes.

The proposals, by developers Nextdom, use housing types which were previously approved for the site, but intend to create a "greater property mix".

The hotel closed 11 years ago and fell derelict, becoming an eyesore.

But a grant of £300,000 from Telford & Wrekin Council in 2015 kickstarted the redevelopment of the site, and though parts of the hotel were demolished later that year, some aspects were retained, and formed part of the redevelopment.

Planning permission was granted for restoration and re-use of the building and up to 41 homes on the site, including 11 apartments in the former hotel. But councillors were told the project was economically unviable without some form of help.

At the moment, all buildings to the rear of the site have been demolished and the site area has been levelled. These plans, if approved, will be the second phase of the development.

In 2012, an initial plan by Nextdom to turn the hotel into apartments was dismissed by planning chiefs.

The Planning Inspectorate has ruled developers cannot transform the grade II-listed Charlton Arms in Wellington, which has been closed since August 2006, into 42 luxury flats.

A government inspector was called in to rule on the scheme after the firm behind the development, appealed.

The fresh plans for the rear of the site were submitted on September 28 and will be decided in the coming months.
