The plans propose to transform the seven bedsits with associated staff support accommodation at 62 Abbey Foregate, into four residential apartments.

The site was converted from a single dwelling into the seven bedsits with staff support in 2003/2004 and has been used as assisted housing since.

The whole property is now empty and has been sold by the housing association.

Under plans, the lower ground floor would be converted into a two bedroom apartment, the upper ground floor would be turned into a one bedroom apartment, the first floor would be turned into a two bedroom apartment and the second floor would be a two bedroom apartment.

The property is not Listed, but is within the Town Centre Conservation Area.

There is a private car parking area to the rear of the property, with access into the upper ground floor of the property. No changes to the external appearance of the property are proposed.

There is an existing main entrance doorway from the front and rear of the property into the upper ground floor communal hallway with a communal staircase which leads to the two upper floors of the property.

The lower ground floor has an independent access from the front and rear of the property.

Abbey Foregate is a predominantly residential area to the east of Shrewsbury town centre. The two adjacent properties are residential houses which have been converted into residential apartments in a similar way to this application.

If plans are approved, the staircase between the lower ground floor and upper ground floor would be removed, as would stud-partitioned walls, substandard bathrooms and kitchens and new internal walls would be created.

Heating systems would also be replaced.

The plans say: "There is very little demand for bedsits as per the current layout. Conversion of the property into four residential apartments is in keeping with the surrounding area.

"The property has ample private car parking. There will be no proposed external works and no impact on the street scene."

A decision will be made on the plans in upcoming weeks.
