Sites identified for new homes in Powys

Six sites are being readied and prepared to build 170 homes in Powys in a bid to hit the council's target of constructing 250 new properties.

The target is part of a bigger Powys County Council plan, and previous work had taken place to identify 80 sites that are under council ownership, to see if they were suitable for development.

As part of the Powys local development plan, that was agreed earlier this year, the authority wants to build an extra 250.

A long term strategy has been developed, which has found 60 suitable sites, and now advanced work is taking place on six sites across the region.

A question has been put forward to cabinet member for housing, James Evans, ahead of Thursday's full council meeting.

In response, he said: "The housing service has established an Affordable Housing Team to lead on the development of the 250 homes.

"The team have been working with Planning and Highways services to consider the viability of approximately 80 sites in council ownership. This work is now complete and the housing service will be developing a long term development strategy, based on approximately 60 sites.

"The team have also been holding engagement events in communities across the county, to identify and confirm housing need."

So far, plans are to build 170 homes on sites in Sarn, Brecon, Clyro, Llanidloes and at two locations in Newtown.

Planning permission has been granted to build on the bowling green at Newtown, and the scheme has passed the first assessment for Welsh Government Innovative Housing Programme grant.

Architects are drawing up plans for Sarn, and will make three properties available for elderly tenant farmers that have lived in the area for many years and are looking to retire.

The site of the former Smithfield in Llanidloes has been transferred to the council's housing revenue account and a design brief is being drawn up.

Also one of the former youth centres in Newtown is set to be knocked down to make way for homes.
