Perton Park Golf Club could be bulldozed to make way for 990 homes
A landmark golf club could be turned into 1,000 new homes – but a decision on the proposal is not expected to be taken until 2021.
Perton Park Golf Club, which is based off Wrottesley Park Road, has had its 50 hectares of land offered up to developers to be turned into 990 homes, due to concerns over long-term financial viability.
The club, which is owned by businessman Mark Allen, has been put forward as part of the Black Country Core Strategy, which will eventually decide where homes will be based across the region in the next 20 years.
An application submitted to the strategy says low and declining membership levels are the reason behind the club effectively being put up for sale.
It states: “Membership levels are low and decreasing. This is having adverse implications on the club’s long-term financial viability.
As a consequence the owners of the club are exploring the potential alternative use of the site alongside IM Land.
“The site is well placed to deliver a large-scale residential development next to one of South Staffordshire’s principal settlements to assist in meeting the growth requirements of both Staffordshire and the Black Country generally.”
The application adds: “If fully developed, it could be assumed that approximately a third of the site will be set aside for public open space and associated infrastructure. As a consequence, the maximum net developable residential area could be in the region of approximately 33 hectares. The site could deliver in the region of 990 dwellings.”
A final decision on any of the 1,500 sites offered up as part of the Black Country Core Strategy, including the golf club, will not be made until 2021.
It is thought the golf club would be forced to relocate if it did not become houses.
“The club is experiencing declining membership which is adversely affecting its financial position. If this trend continues, which it is expected to do, the existing use will need to be relocated,” the report to the Black Country Core Strategy added.
Mark Allen, the owner of Perton Park Golf Club, has declined to comment on the plans.
