A Shropshire village bowling green has been saved after the closure of the adjoining pub.

Permission for four new homes on the site of the former Swan Pub in Woore was granted by Shropshire Council's north planning committee yesterday.

The planning application for the redevelopment of site included retention of bowling green and the provision of dedicated car parking for the club.

Woore parish council had objected to the planning application.

But Councillor Roy Aldcroft told the planning meeting that he believed that with the closure of the pub this was the best compromise for the site that there could be.

He said there had been fears for the future of the bowling club. But this plan retained the club and car parking spaces.

"It will also retain the car parking spaces for the nearby church," he said.

Two people objected to the application saying that the plans would put even more cars onto an already busy road.

However, five people supported the plan, saying that affordable family homes were desperately needed in Woore, that it would improve the appearance of an unattractive area within the heart of the village and would save the bowling club.
