Jan Childs, of Shrewsbury, suffered at the hands of a "nightmare tenant" and is now having her case looked into by a big-hitting Cabinet minister.

She says if extreme breaches of contract by either tenants or landlords were treated as criminal matters it would lead to better justice.

A tenant left one of her properties in Much Wenlock owing £6,500 in rent, and it also cost her another £3,000 to get it back into a state that she could let out again.

Jan, aged in her 70s, is having her case looked into by levelling up, housing and communities secretary, Michael Gove, after it was raised in Parliament by her MP, Daniel Kawczynski.

Mr Kawczynski said that the tenant had "scarpered".

She said: "I had a nightmare tenant. At one stage he was accepted as homeless and was being funded to stay in a hotel as well as being in my place."
