The 2DS XL is Nintendo's new lightweight handheld console and its coming this summer
There’s another edition to the gaming giant’s console family coming.
Nintendo is launching a brand new DS in the UK this summer.
The 2DS XL will land in July and the Japanese gaming giant says it will offer a new choice for users’ DS gaming needs.
The handheld console will be compatible with all 3DS games, but as the name suggests it will run them in 2D. The system will have the same size screen (4.88 inches) as the 3DS, and will also contain near-field communication technology so it can support amiibo cards and figures.
It will come in two bold new colour schemes – either black and turquoise or white and orange.
There are also some new controls added to the set-up, with the introduction of a C Stick and ZL and ZR as a second set of shoulder buttons, which Nintendo says offers “expanded control options” for gamers.
The C Stick is of particular interest as that button is pressure sensitive, affecting gameplay depending on how hard you press it.
The console will go on sale on July 28, but Nintendo is yet to confirm the price.
The announcement continues what has been a busy and very successful couple of months for Nintendo, having launched flagship console the home/mobile gaming Switch to much fanfare in March.
That device is already reporting very strong sales – the best in recent Nintendo history – and appears to have re-energised a firm that a year ago appeared to be running out of ideas for how to stay in touch with the giants of PlayStation and Xbox.
