Microsoft has quietly announced a new desktop keyboard that comes with a fingerprint scanner integrated into one of the keys.

The new Modern Keyboard has the scanner housed in the Windows key to the right on the space bar, and can be used to log into Windows 10 and websites using the Windows Hello user recognition feature.

That means a quicker log-in without having to rely on a password, while the Modern Keyboard can also be used in both a wireless or wired mode.

It is worth noting that according to the specifications, the keyboard only works with Windows 10.

This kind of keyboard functionality does come with a price however – it’s currently listed on the Microsoft website in the US for $129.99 (£103), ahead of going on sale at a later date.

The firm’s standard Surface Keyboard costs £90 in the UK, so the Modern Keyboard is likely to be priced over £100 if and when it does appear on this side of the Atlantic.

Biometric log-ins have become increasingly common on mobile devices in recent years – almost all major smartphones now come with fingerprint scanners.
