Soon your WhatsApp backups will no longer count towards Google Drive storage

Chats and media will have unlimited backups from November.

Android users are in luck as backing up WhatsApp data with Google Drive will no longer count towards their storage quota.

From November 12, chats and media from the Facebook-owned app will have unlimited backups on Google Drive which won’t eat into existing allowances.

While chats are unlikely to take up much storage space, photos and videos can add up over time.

iOS users won’t be able to take advantage of the perk, as it’s only available to devices with a Google account activated and Google Play services installed.

However, WhatsApp has warned that any backups that haven’t been updated in more than a year will be automatically removed from Google Drive storage.

WhatsApp, bought by Facebook for £11.4 billion in 2014, recently gained a group video and voice calling feature, allowing up to four friends to participate in one conversation.
