The feature, to support video creators, will go live on October 18.

Keen YouTubers and vloggers with a Google Pixel have been handed a boost with the news that the smartphone’s camera app is to start supporting external microphones.

From the launch of the Pixel 3 on October 18, all three generations of the Pixel phone’s native camera app will enable users to record video alongside audio from a plugged-in external microphone.

The announcement is a big plus for video content creators, YouTubers and vloggers who use their Pixel to capture video – meaning they will no longer have to rely on the built-in mic or using a third-party app for their audio.

It also fits Google’s positioning of the Pixel range, which the company has spent a long time promoting as great tools to enhance creativity among users.

The announcement was made by a member of the Pixel camera engineering team, who took to the Pixel User Community forum on Google’s website to respond to multiple queries about if and when the feature would ever be introduced.

“I have been keeping an eye on this thread since the beginning and have good news,” he said.

“At the same time as Pixel 3 launch (October 18), we will introduce support for Android-compatible plugged-in external microphones in the default camera app for all Pixels. I hope you all enjoy the update.”

Google unveiled its third generation Pixel handsets last week, which included new photography features including enhanced artificial intelligence to help identify the best shots taken in a burst of photos.
