The Cambrian Heritage Railways officially opened the Pen Y Garreg Halt, in Pant, near Oswestry, at the weekend. It marks the southern terminus of the railway's restored line, which runs at weekends from Llynclys, four miles south of Oswestry.

The idea for the halt was conceived three years ago to boost tourism by creating opportunities for walkers and cyclists.

Vice chairman Richard Jones hands flowers to Sylvia Kynaston at the grand opening. She allowed the railway to use some of her land.

The opening was performed by Arthur Walpole, Shropshire Councillor for Llanymynech. He said: "We're fortunate to boast a wealth of local industrial heritage and we're now protecting it.

Romer Hoseason, railway chairman, said: "It is a truly rare event to open a new station on the national network but on a heritage railway, it's rarer still.

"The first part of the platform was made useable last year but was only able to accommodate one coach of the train. The facility proved immediately popular with cyclists and walkers who use the station as their starting or return point."
